Flaine, Information & Area Guide

Flaine is a ski resort in the Haute Savoie region of the French Alps and is a part of the linked Le Grand Massif domain. It consists of 266 km of slopes and there are 72 ski lifts connecting the slopes which range between 700m and 2500m in altitude. There are six villages in this area, one of which is Flaine, the village of Flaine is situated at 1,600 metres (5,200ft) and the ski area is accessible by ski lift from the village, although it’s also possible to ski in and out of Flaine, especially as cars are banned in the centre. Flaine has access to 140km of pistes which are suitable for all levels and its longest run is named “Cascade” at 14km long.

The resort is modern and offers a good range of activities and après ski, the site for the resort was originally discovered in 1959 and the planners decided to create an aesthetically pleasing development. The plan was created by Marcel Breuer, a world-famous Bauhaus architect, and has been designed to blend in with the natural environment and the end result is a resort that feels very tranquil and private.
The ski runs were designed by champion skier Emile Allais, and everything has been created to give a balance between integration and functionality. It was one of the first resorts in Europe to have snowmaking facilities. The advantage of choosing this resort is that it’s relatively compact, and no matter where you’re staying you’re only a few steps away from ski runs and resort facilities. It has one of the best snow records in the French Alps, and there are 218 snow cannons which guarantee snow cover and the grooming is excellent, it’s a very family friendly resort with ski schools for the little ones of the family and ski lifts are free for children under five.

The nearest city is Geneva and the transfer time from Geneva airport to Flaine is only one hour making it one of the most easily accessible resorts in the Alps.

Le Grand Massif is an impressive area with slalom banks and forest trails which are ideal for intermediate levels, cross country tracks on the Grand massif run for around 64km. Beginners have two very good nursery areas with gentle runs over 118 slopes. Intermediates have a great variety of pistes some can be very challenging over 107 fairly difficult slopes. Advanced levels have seriously tough terrain that will test even the most experienced and the thrill seekers will love over 41 slopes. Boarders are kept entertained with plenty of off pistes and varied terrain which can prove difficult. Other activities include an ice driving circuit where you can use your own car or one can be provided. Snowmobiling and dog sledging are available along with a cinema, swimming pool, gym and spa. During the season concerts are held across all genres including classical, jazz, pop and rock. There are not a lot of shops in Flaine however; you will find clothing, sports equipment and fashion shops in the form of trendy boutiques, souvenir, gift shops and supermarkets, bakeries and regional produce shops for when you want to eat at home.

Après ski tends to be on the quieter side, therefore, Flaine is not for the party animal it is more for families or couples. There are plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars where you can relax and get cosy in front of a roaring fire serving good food with a great atmosphere. Everything is served from traditional Savoyard to gourmet style French cuisine, burgers and hot dogs to pizza and pasta and of course International favourites. Some of the restaurants offer a home delivery service or take away free of charge which is a great idea after a busy day on the slopes. The bars can be noisy at times with live music and themed nights. A Big screen TV is on offer for live concerts and sports events with pool tables and a games room. Happy hour with weekly quizzes and karaoke nights and barbeques where you can eat al fresco obviously, there are outdoor heaters! The bar at the bowling alley is very popular especially with families and that stays open until 3 am! If you fancy a dance then pop along to the local nightclub and dance the night away and you can make your way home in the early hours. Once visited Flaine will never be forgotten, great skiing and facilities you will return again!
